A senior official announced today that Swinger Hill is to be renamed Howard Hill, after former Prime Minister John Howard.
The move comes after heavy lobbying from the Australian Council of Conservatives (ACoC) who complained that the name Swinger Hill had negative connotations and “promoted infidelity” and “relationships of a sordid nature”.
The head of ACoC, Janine Fraser said today in a media release that, “This is a win for the good people of the formerly named Swinger Hill, and for families across Canberra.”
Local resident Bob Saunders said the move was “disappointing” and would be a “huge inconvenience” to residents as they will all have to change their addresses.
“My wife and I have always loved Swinger Hill, we have developed some very, very close friendships with other couples in the suburb. It just seems silly to change the name over nothing,” said Mr Saunders.
The Canberra landmark was developed in the 1970s and was originally part of the suburb of Phillip.
This hasn’t actually happened right? Changin the name is completely needless and I’m pretty sure most residents, including this one, would have been against the decision if consulted.
Swinger Hill is / was a local name for the hill on which Swinger Trig Station was located – Swinger Trig Station was named after Louis Swinger.
Seems a little ridiculous to disrespect the memory of Louis Swinger just because his last name makes some (who obviously need to get their minds out of the gutter) think of infidelity!
We are devo!
