Free Pussy Riot set to leave Kony 2012 for dead

A new trending hashtag on Twitter looks like dethroning Kony 2012 as one of the world’s most popular tags ever.

The #FreePussyRiot hashtag is trending worldwide after the Russian all girl punk band Pussy Riot were sentenced to 2 years prison for causing hooliganism.

The band were arrested earlier in the year due to their protest performance against Vladimir Putin inside Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral.

Celebrities such as Paul McCartney, Billy Bragg and even Duncan Bannatyne from the UK’s Dragons Den have led the charge in showing their support.

“Many people in the civilized world are allowed to voice their opinions as long as they don’t hurt anyone, or sing out of key” said Sir Paul in his open letter to the band. The letter also contained an image of the former Beatle with an acoustic guitar doing a two fingered freedom salute.

A spokesperson from Putin’s media outlet has said that, “whilst Nadezhda Tolokonnikova is a very attractive woman, this does not give her and her band any rights whatsoever, especially for making such a scene.”

Whilst many are hailing the trending hashtag as a symbol of artistic freedom, skeptics are suggesting it is more about the first two words being a frequently used search term on the Internet.
